Rogue Valley Farm to School educates children about our food system through hands-on farm and garden programs, and by increasing local foods in school meals. We inspire an appreciation of local agriculture that improves the economy and environment of our community and the health of its members.
In six years RVF2S has grown from a one-site on-farm program to five on-farm program sites in two counties. The organization has an ever-growing amazing staff of dedicated educators, organizers and service members. And an annual budget that has quadrupled to allow program delivery to over 10,000 students preschool – high school students in 2015.
RVF2S is a FoodCorps service site, as well as hosting a full-time AmeriCorps member. Service members work along side RVF2S staff to teach hands-on lessons about food and nutrition; build and tend school gardens; teach cooking lessons so kids can taste the fresh food they’ve grown; and change what is on children’s lunch trays, giving them healthy food from local farms. Increasing student exposure to real food helps them grow up healthy.
RVF2S believes that farm to school programs hold great potential as a solution for two of the major challenges facing our society: concerns about the diet and health of children and the dwindling of small farms.
