OCFSN November Newsletter

  • An Update from the Leadership Team (LT) to the OCFSN Community

As we come towards the end of the 2023 fiscal year, the LT is excited to share some news from the past year with everyone:

Congrats, Shin! We are excited to announce that Shin has moved into the Executive Director of Network Development position at OCFSN! Over the past year, Shin has done a remarkable job as the Network Coordinator: fostering new relationships and building on established ones, coordinating and hosting convenings, managing the workings of a budding non-profit, and representing OCFSN at a Statewide level. We are thrilled to have Shin move into this role, bringing her years of experience with operations and program management, communications, systems thinking, cross-team coordination, equity and justice. As there is a desire from leadership and staff for a shared leadership model, we will continue to work towards a Co-Director model for the network.

The Leadership Team is grateful for the leadership and vision of network members and staff as we collectively continue the work of strengthening Oregon’s local and regional food systems.

Welcome, Board Members! As part of our transition to becoming a standalone nonprofit, we were able to welcome four amazing folks to the board: Gabriel Baron, Joel Caris, Lisa Nishimura, and Sara Miller. They will join LT members Eddie Hill, Katy Giombolini, and Lauren Gwin to round out the full board.

Lessons Learned: This has been a big year (or two) for learning on the LT. We’ve gained knowledge on:

    • How to set up a 501c3

    • How to register with the Federal Government for grants

    • How to find on-call HR support

    • First steps for a shared leadership model

    • Oodles of information about event paperwork and liabilities

    • … the list goes on and on.

We want to make sure that you can learn from our journey! Please reach out to the OCFSN LT Chair (admin@ocfsn.org) with your questions, and we’ll share any knowledge that we’ve picked up in the process of formalizing our non-profit standing.

Wishing you all a smooth transition into the winter months!
